QR code stickers have quietly moved from marketing gimmick to supply chain infrastructure. The shift happened because a QR code can carry something a traditional barcode cannot: not just what a product is, but which specific one it is, when it was made and where it came from.

What QR Code Stickers Can Carry That Barcodes Cannot

A retail barcode holds a product number. That is all it needs to do, and it does it well. These are 1D Barcodes and commonly seen as EAN13 on product packaging.

QR code stickers hold considerably more data in the same physical space, because they store information in two dimensions rather than one. That capacity is what unlocks the useful applications. These are 2D Barcodes and often found on product packaging for competition promotions or further details about a product.

Batch and Identity
Not just “this is a jar of chutney” but “this is jar 4,192 from batch 71, made on the 3rd”. If a batch needs withdrawing, you know precisely which units are affected.

The code points to a record rather than containing it. A link to a web page can be embedded, meaning you can update what the customer sees without reprinting a single label.

Where QR Code Stickers Earn Their Place

Recall precision. Without batch-level identification, a product recall takes everything. With it, you withdraw the affected batch and leave the rest on shelf. The saving on a single avoided full recall pays for a great deal of labelling.

Provenance and supply chain records. Food, pharmaceutical and component supply chains increasingly need to demonstrate where something came from, not simply state it. A scannable link to a verifiable record does that.

Asset and equipment tracking. QR code stickers on a piece of equipment links to its service history, manuals and inspection records. Anyone with a phone can check its status in the field.

Consumer information overflow. Where a pack has no room for everything a customer might want, a code gives them access to allergen detail, sourcing information, recipes or instructions without cluttering the label. If you do not want peel-and-reveal labels, this makes for a neat solution.

Printing QR Code Stickers So They Actually Scan

Most scan failures come from the printing rather than the code, and all of them are avoidable.

Print the code, do not paste a picture of it. A JPEG of a QR code carries compression artefacts along every edge. A thermal printhead can only place a dot or not place one, so those soft grey edges become ragged. Generate the code properly at the printer’s own resolution. Respect the quiet zone. The clear margin around QR code stickers is part of the symbol. Design elements creeping into it cause failures that look inexplicable. As a general rule, give your barcode a 10-20% border with no other print to maximise readability. 1D barcodes need this at each end of the barcode, 2D barcodes need it on all 4 sides.

Do not shrink it below its minimum. More data means more modules, and more modules in the same physical size means each one is smaller. QR code stickers carrying a long URL needs more room than one carrying a short reference. The barcode resolution must be within the scope of the printer resolution.

Keep contrast high. QR code stickers benefit from dark code on a light background. Inverted and low-contrast codes fail routinely on older scanners. Keep it simple – black and white works best but other high-contrast colours work too. Best to test before committing to a long print run.

Variable data printing generates a unique code for each label in a run, driven from a database or a sequence. Every sticker carries its own identity rather than a shared one.

Two practical routes. Print the variable code as part of the label at production, which suits fixed batch sizes. Or print a base label with an overprintable varnish and add the code at the point of pack, which suits operations where the data is not known until the moment of packing.

Do You Need a GS1 Licence?

This causes confusion, so it is worth being clear.

QR codes themselves are free to use. Anyone can generate one pointing at their own web address without licensing anything.

Where GS1 comes in is if you want the code to carry a GS1 formatted identifier that other organisations in a supply chain can interpret consistently. Retailer and healthcare supply chains increasingly expect that structure. For internal traceability or a consumer-facing link, you do not need it.
