Coffee Label Information: What UK Coffee Brands Need To Include

What coffee label information is required on your coffee labels and what does it actually tell the customer? For independent roasters and growing coffee brands, the label is often the first and only chance to make an impression before the bag goes into a basket.

At Positive ID Labels, we produce labels for artisan food and drink brands including specialty coffee. Call us on 01332 864895 to discuss your requirements.

Legal Requirements For Coffee Label Information In The UK

UK food labelling law sets out what must appear on packaged coffee sold to consumers. Getting this wrong creates compliance risk.

Product Name
The name must accurately describe the product. “Ground coffee,” “whole bean coffee,” “instant coffee,” and “coffee blend” are all distinct product types and must be labelled accordingly.
Ingredient List
Required where the product contains more than one ingredient. For blended coffees, all components must be declared.
Allergen Declaration
Coffee itself is not a listed allergen. However, if your product is processed or packed in an environment handling nuts, milk, cereals, or other allergens, a “may contain” advisory may be required.
Net Weight
The weight of coffee in the package, expressed in grams.

This may need an e symbol depending on your weighing process.
Best Before Date
Roasted coffee has a shelf life. The best before date tells the consumer when quality can no longer be guaranteed. You can place this using a simple date labelling gun.
Storage Instructions
Typically “store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.” Some roasters add instructions to reseal after opening.
Responsible Party Details
The name and address of the business responsible for placing the product on the UK market.
Country of Origin
Where the coffee was grown. For blends using beans from multiple origins, the rule is to list the country of origin if all beans are from the same country, or declare “blend of coffees from more than one country” where applicable.

Coffee Label Information That Builds Brand Value

What Specialty Coffee Brands Include Beyond Legal Requirements

Roast Level And Tasting Notes On Coffee Labels

Legal requirements set the floor for coffee label information. Specialty and artisan coffee brands typically go further because consumers in this segment want to know more about what they are buying.

Roast Level
Light, medium, or dark roast. Many roasters use a roast score or visual indicator.

Customers often make the primary decision based on the strength of the coffee
Tasting Notes
Descriptors such as “notes of blackcurrant and milk chocolate” communicate flavour profile in a way that resonates with specialty coffee buyers. These are not legally required but are expected in this market segment.
Processing Method
Washed, natural, honey, anaerobic. Processing method significantly affects flavour, and specialty buyers increasingly factor this into their choices.
Farm or Estate Details
Single-estate coffees can carry the farm name, altitude, and producer details. This storytelling adds perceived value and justifies a premium price point.
Sustainability And Certification On Coffee Label Information

Certifications such as Rainforest Alliance, Fairtrade Foundation, and organic accreditations can appear on coffee packaging labels where the brand holds the relevant certification. These carry legal obligations, do not place a certification mark on a coffee label without holding the appropriate accreditation.

For brands using FSC-compliant materials in their packaging, this can also be referenced. All materials used by Positive ID Labels are FSC-compliant.

Choosing The Right Label Material For Coffee Packaging

Coffee bags present a specific challenge for label application. Most specialty coffee bags are made from multi-layer laminate films with a matte or textured surface finish.

For premium coffee brands, the label material should complement the quality of the product. Our Xeikon press at 1200dpi produces exceptional results on premium paper substrates, the kind of high-end finish that matches the expectations of specialty coffee buyers.

For brands selling into chilled environments or packaging formats where moisture exposure is likely, polypropylene substrates with appropriate adhesive are more suitable than paper.

Frequently Asked Questions About Coffee Label Information

Does Coffee Need To Declare Caffeine Content On The Label?

Not for standard roasted or ground coffee. However, if you are producing coffee beverages, energy drinks, or any product making a specific caffeine claim, different rules may apply. Take regulatory advice if your product falls outside the standard coffee category.

What Format Should The Best Before Date Be In?

“Best before” followed by the date in day/month/year format is the standard for most products. For products with a shelf life over three months, month/year is acceptable. Your label design should make the date clearly legible.

How Small Can Coffee Label Information Text Be?

UK food labelling regulations require that mandatory information is clearly legible. A practical minimum is 1.2mm x-height (the height of a lowercase letter). If your label is small, prioritise mandatory information and use a font size that a customer can read without difficulty.

Can I Use Front Of Pack Claims Like “Award-Winning” Or “Artisan”?

General promotional claims are permitted provided they are not misleading. Specific claims referencing competition wins must be accurate and verifiable. Do not use certification marks or logos you do not hold the rights to.

Do I Need A Barcode On My Coffee Labels?

Not legally for direct-to-consumer retail. However, if you are supplying wholesale customers, many require a barcode for their stock management systems. GS1 barcodes are the standard in UK retail and food service. Call us on 01332 864895 to discuss barcode printing as part of your label specification.
