Standard labels are printed on an opaque white substrate. Clear labels are printed on transparent polypropylene film. When applied to a glass or clear plastic jar, the printed elements, your brand, product name, ingredients, and other required information, appear to float directly on the surface.

The effect depends on how well the label is applied and how well the design is adapted for a transparent substrate. A design built for an opaque white label will not automatically translate. Areas of white in the design must be printed using white ink, since without it the label background is simply transparent.

White ink is essential for opaque elements

If your design includes a white background behind any printed element, text, logo, or image, this must be reproduced using white ink. Without white ink, those elements will be transparent and invisible against a pale or coloured product.

Consider what sits behind the label

The product content is visible through the transparent areas of the label. Honey is amber, olives are green, and raspberry jam is red - design your labels around the product.
