Direct Thermal Printing
Direct thermal printers apply heat directly to chemically-treated so-called thermal labels, which darken where heated. No ribbon required – just load labels and print.
- Best for: Shipping labels, receipts, short-term labels, food date coding
- Limitation: Labels fade over time with heat or sunlight exposure (typically 6-12 months)
Thermal Transfer Printing
Thermal transfer printers use a thermal ribbon to deposit ink in the form of a wax or resin onto labels. The ribbon passes between the printhead and label, transferring pigment where heated.
- Best for: Product labels, asset tags, outdoor labels, anything requiring permanence
- Advantage: Labels last years without fading; works on synthetic materials like polypropylene

Label Applicators
